My Breast Cancer Journey: Finding My Voice and Fighting for My Life

A Voice for Healing and Hope

In 2020, at the height of the COVID pandemic, I discovered a lump in my breast. Though initial mammogram results were “negative,” an insistent whisper told me otherwise. My body knew something was amiss, a warning I now believe was the Holy Spirit guiding me. Where others might have accepted the diagnosis, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong. This inner voice grew louder, a scream urging me to advocate for myself.

I demanded a referral to a breast surgeon. Despite repeated assurances that my results were clear, I stood firm: “It’s my body. It’s my money. I want to see a breast surgeon.” My insistence led to a referral, and eventually, a biopsy. Nine needle biopsies later, the life-changing news arrived: invasive lobular intermediate carcinoma. The tumor was 8.5 cm and had already spread to my lymph nodes. If I hadn’t listened to that unwavering inner voice, I truly believe I wouldn’t be here today.

My journey through 18 rounds of chemotherapy, a double mastectomy with reconstruction, and 28 rounds of radiation was grueling. Yet, in those difficult moments, I found profound strength. I committed to healing, using visualization and meditation to empower my cells to become my biggest cheerleaders. I believed I was already healed, even before treatment concluded.

It was during this intense period that I felt a powerful calling a purpose beyond my own battle. God wanted me to do something more. The idea for The Giving Heart Foundation was born right there in my oncologist’s office. I envisioned passing on my post-mastectomy lift recliner chair, a robotic device that provided crucial comfort and independence during recovery. My oncologist advised me to focus on my own healing, but I knew my time to help others was now.

After my double mastectomy, I passed my chair to my best friend’s mom, then to other women. So far, I’ve helped about 28 women, giving them this “throne” of independence and dignity. The Giving Heart Foundation now provides these vital lift recliner chairs, along with comforting blankets, compression boots, and side tables, free of charge, to women in the Tulsa area and surrounding regions.

My journey taught me the critical importance of self-advocacy and listening to my inner voice. My greatest trials led to my greatest contribution. The Giving Heart Foundation stands as a testament to this: we are here for every woman, lifting up one woman at a time.
